BULLETIN |
Volume 7 |
The Kinderhook Village Recreation Commission will hold it's annual Halloween parade for children of the village on Thursday, October 31st at 6:00 P.M., beginning in front of the Treasure Shop. The parade will cross Route 9 south to Rothermel Avenue and end at the pavilion in the park where bags of candy and cider will be distributed.
This popular event is funded entirely by local businesses and individuals in our community. Donations can be made at the Kinderhook Village Hall or placed in any of our "Halloween cans" located throughout the village. Thank you for your continued support.
D.P.W. Superintendent Jack Taylor has set Monday, October 19th as the tentative date for the start of leaf pickup. All piles of leaves should be raked without stones, branches and twigs, to the edge of the road or over the sidewalk to the street for pickup. Branches and limbs will not be picked up. Leaf pickup will continue into November. There will be an announcement in the newspaper regarding the end date for picking up leaves.
Please also note that leaves will not be picked up in the spring as was done this past spring due to the early snow, unless Old Man Winter comes early again with the white powder.
The Village Board of Trustees would like all owners of property adjoining a sidewalk to know that they are required by Village Law to remove snow or ice within eighteen hours after the same shall have fallen or accumulated thereon. We realize sometimes it is difficult, but please make every effort to do this. Children and adults walking and forced into the road are at risk. If you would like the name of a person or business to remove snow please call the Village Hall at 758-9882. Our apologies for the wording of the warning placed on doors last year. We know you are not criminals but many were in violation of this ordinance.
On behalf of the Village
Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Law Committee, thanks to everyone who
participated in the Visual Preference Program held on July 15th. Regarding the
written surveys, as of this date 40% of the residential and business surveys
have been handed in. This is a very good response where the norm is about 15%.
The next public meeting of the Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Law Committee will
be held on Thursday, November 12 at 7:00 P.M. upstairs in the Village Hall.
Consultant Nan Stolzenburg will present the results of the Vision and Visual
Preference Program and the results of the written residential and business
surveys. After the results are presented, participants will work in small
groups to assist in developing a vision statement for the village. The goal of
the second part of the evening will be to have participants put into words the
future vision and direction in which they would like to see the village go.
Please continue to provide your input to the Comprehensive Plan and Zoning
Law Committee.
The Kinderhook Business and Professional Association will sponsor a scarecrow seminar Sunday, October 4 from 1-3 P.M. on the Village Green. The instructor for the learn to build program will be Michael Melle. After you have made your scarecrow, you are welcome to participate in the Scarecrow Contest. All scarecrows must be completed by Saturday, October 10. Winners will be announced on Sunday, October 11th on the Village Green. Call Chris at 758-1825 for more information.
The Kinderhook Village Candlelight Night will be Friday, December 11th. The K.B.P.A. has said most businesses will be open and serving free refreshments from 6:00 - 9:00 P.M. Carolers, Santa Claus, and joyous activities are expected. For more information call Sharon at 758-9265.

Greetings Village Residents
We welcome new residents and hope everyone had a safe and warm winter. Spring is here and so is the 2nd anniversary issue of the Kinderhook Village Bulletin newsletter. Mayor Richard Phillips and the Village Trustees hope you will continue to find the newsletter worthwhile and if you have any comments or suggestions please let us know.
Let's Show Our Pride in the Village
The Village Board would again like to encourage keeping our village clean and neat. We are kicking this off by a "Pride in the Village Weekend," the weekend of April 18 and 19. This is not to be confused with our annual Village clean-up in May for rubbish and junk. We encourage residents to make a special effort that weekend to clean up the fronts of your properties, including picking up leaves and litter in the street/sidewalk area.
Leaves raked to the street will be vacuumed up by the Village DPW on April 20, 21, and 22. This is being done in the Spring this year because the early snow in the Fall halted completion of normal leaf pick-up.
Let's continue these efforts to keep the Village clean throughout the year. We will continue to have the DPW staff clean the Village Square area before and after weekends. We ask residents to continue keeping the sidewalk/street areas clean and free of debris. Also, please mow the area between the sidewalk and curb and weed the area in front of the curb.
Walking the Dog
We want to remind dog owners to please pick up after your dogs if being walked on public property, sidewalks, or someone else's property. We have recently received numerous complaints. All that is needed are a couple of plastic bags or a small plastic shovel. The Village Board does not want to have to enact a pooper-scooper law.
The annual Village Cleanup Weekend will be held May 16th and 17th, Saturday and Sunday. As usual containers will be located behind the Fire House on Chatham Street This service is for Village of Kinderhook residents only. Proof of residency may be requested. Time for disposing of refuse is between 9:00 AM. and 4:00 P.M. For a list of what is not allowed or for more information call 758-9882.
Village Meeting Time Change
The Village Board meetings, which are on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, will start at 8:00 P.M. for the months of May, June, July and August. This change is only for the summer. In September the meetings will start at the regular time of 7:30 P.M.
Mayor Announces Summer Office Hour
Mayor Richard Phillips will change his office hours every Monday from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Village Hall starting April 7th. If you have any concerns or issues you would like to discuss feel free to stop by. In his absence a Trustee will fill in.
Street Lights Out?
Do you know of any street light not working? How about the one near your home? If you do please call the village office at 758-9882. Please give the following information to the village staff: telephone pole number, street and name of property pole is on. Niagara Mohawk charges us whether they are working or not so let's keep our tax dollars working for us.
Parking on Sidewalks
New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, Section 1202, prohibits the parking of vehicles on sidewalks. Please do not park cars and trucks on sidewalks, in front of fire hydrants, in front of driveways, and in crosswalks. The New York State Police have received complaints along these lines, especially in the Village Square area.
Burn Barrels Not Allowed
Just a reminder to all village residents that the burning of papers and/or garbage is prohibited in the village. In fact, burning of anything, including leaves, brush and wood is also not allowed. Questions and complaints should be called in to the New York State Forest Ranger / Environmental Conservation Officer at 784-3216
Building Permits Required
Residents are reminded of the fact that before any construction can be started a building permit and/or zoning permit is required. This includes roof shingles, sheds, gazebos, fences, swimming pools (inground and above) and siding. If you have any questions or need more information call the CEO/ZEO (building inspector) at 784-2508.
