The Kinderhook Business and Professional
Association will sponsor a scarecrow seminar Sunday, October 5 from 1-3
P.M. on the Village Green. The instructor for the learn to build program will
be Massachusetts Art Institute graduate Michael Melle. Call 758-1825 for more
information.
After you have made your scarecrow, you are welcome to
participate in the Scarecrow Contest. Scarecrows must be 3 ft. tall and visible
from the road. All scare crows must be completed by Saturday, October 10 for
judging October 11th. Winners will be announced on Sunday, October 12th at 2:00
pm on the Village Green. Businesses will receive ribbons for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
place and residents will receive special prizes. Entry forms may be picked up
at Blackwood & Brouwer Booksellers or
Silver Lining Gallery.
DPW Superintendent Jack Taylor has set Tuesday, October 14th as the tentative date for the start of leaf pickup. All piles of leaves should be raked without stones and twigs, to the edge of the road or over the sidewalk to the street for pickup. Leaf pickup will continue into November. There will be an announcement in the newspaper regarding the end date for picking up leaves.
The Village Fire Department will be flushing fire hydrants on October 6th and 7th, after 6:00 pm in the evening. You may notice discoloration in the water and should be aware that this is normal and not harmful. However, residents are cautioned to check their water before using automatic washers.
New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, Section 1202, prohibits the parking of vehicles on sidewalks. Please do not park cars and trucks on sidewalks, in front of fire hydrants, in front of driveways, and in crosswalks.
The Kinderhook Village Halloween parade will be held on Friday, October 31st at 6:00 pm, beginning in front of the Treasure Shop. The parade will cross Route 9 south to Rothermel Avenue and end at the pavilion in the park where bags of candy and cider will be distributed to the children.
This popular event has grown significantly in recent years and is supported entirely upon donations by local businesses and individuals in our community. Donations can be made to the Kinderhook Village Hall or placed in any of our "Halloween cans" located throughout village businesses. Thank you for your continued support of this fun, family event!

The Kinderhook Village Candlelight Night will be Friday, December 12th. Plan to visit our festive village and all the beautifully decorated stores and shops. Most businesses will be open and serving free refreshments. Santa Claus has promised to greet the children at the National Union Bank of Kinderhook. Carolers will stroll through the village and special events such as live music will entertain you as you shop and browse.
Although the weather is still sunny, pretty soon, after the leaves have fallen, old man winter will be upon us. Mowing grass and raking leaves will be replaced by shoveling snow. The owners of property adjoining a sidewalk are required to remove snow or ice within eighteen hours after the same shall have fallen or accumulated thereon. Parked or abandoned vehicles must also be removed from streets at times for snow plowing purposes by order of the Superintendent of Public Works.
You will find a listing of the events mentioned in this bulletin, as well as many other activities in the Kinderhook vicinity, in the Calendar of Events.

GREETINGS VILLAGE RESIDENTS
Spring is here and so is the 1st anniversary issue of the Kinderhook VILLAGE BULLETIN newsletter. Mayor Richard Phillips and the Village Trustees hope you will continue to find the newsletter worthwhile and if you have any comments or suggestions please let us know.
VILLAGE MEETING TIME CHANGE
The Village Board meetings, which are on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, will start at 8:00 P.M. for the months of May, June, July and August. This change is only for the summer. In September the meetings will start at the regular time of 7:30 P.M.
MAYOR ANNOUNCES SUMMER OFFICE HOUR
Mayor Richard Phillips will change his office hours every Monday from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Village Hall starting April 7th. If you have any concerns or issues you would like to discuss feel free to stop by. In his absence a Trustee will fill in.
VILLAGE CLEAN-UP IN MAY
The annual Village Cleanup Weekend will be held May 17th and 18th, Saturday and Sunday. As usual containers will be located behind the Fire House on Chatham Street This service is for Village of Kinderhook residents only. Proof of residency may be requested. Time for disposing of refuse is between 9:00 AM. and 4:00 P.M. For a list of what is not allowed or for more information call 758-9882.
STREET LIGHTS OUT?
Do you know of any street light not working? If you do please call the village office at 758-9882. Please give the following information to the village staff: telephone pole number, street and name of property pole is on. Niagara Mohawk charges us whether they are working or not so let's keep our tax dollars working for us.
HELP KEEP OUR VILLAGE CLEAN
The Village Board would like to encourage keeping the village clean and neat. We have stressed this with our DPW staff; including special efforts to clean the Village Square area before and after weekends. We ask residents to please keep sidewalk areas clean and clear of overgrown trees and bushes for both safety and aesthetics. Also please mow areas between curb and sidewalk and weed areas in front of curbs. For those of you who have been pitching in, we thank you very much.
WALKING THE DOG
Along the same lines, we would like to remind dog owners that we are fortunate to have a number of appropriate areas in and around the Village to walk dogs and let them relieve themselves without leaving a mess or getting a pedestrian or neighbor upset. We notice many dog owners who pick up after their dogs or walk them in areas less traveled and we thank you very much for doing this. The Village does not wish to have the need to enact a pooper-scooper law.
PARKING ON SIDEWALKS
New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, Section 1202, prohibits the parking of vehicles on sidewalk. Please do not park cars and trucks on sidewalks, in front of fire hydrants and in crosswalks. The New York State Police have received complaints along these lines, especially in the Village Square area.
ROUTE 9 SPEED LIMIT
Just a reminder, the New York State Department of Transportation has just replaced all signs along Route 9 (Broad and Chatham Streets) lowering the speed limit from 45 mph to 35 mph. Please be careful as the State Police will be monitoring traffic. In addition the Village Board last year lowered the following streets to 25 mph: Rothermel Lane, Rothermel Avenue, Rothermel Extension, William Street and Hudson Street from Broad to Maiden Lane. These streets join Gaffney which is already 25 mph.
NEWS FROM THE STATE POLICE
We are fortunate to have a New York State Police Substation located
right here in the village hall. Plans are under way to relocate them in a
larger and more visible area in the hall.
The State Police will be
occupying the space currently used by the Department of Public Works. Therefore
in addition to the renovation of the Village Hall we will be building a new
heated garage attached to the current pole barn in back of the fire house.
Watch for the open house in late spring or early summer.
The current staff
includes Officer in charge Trooper Wayne Voss, and Troopers Don Bailey, Ed
Benziger and Bill Gray.
Troopers Bailey and Gray were recently responsible
for developing leads that led to the arrests of four individuals on grounds of
reckless endangerment. These individuals were responsible for a shooting in the
village in January. In addition troopers from Kinderhook investigated and
arrested armed robbers in a January hold-up of a convenience store in
Niverville. These are examples of the fine work that has made the residents and
the businesses ask that the State Police remain in our Village.
BUILDING PERMITS REQUIRED
Residents are reminded of the fact that before any construction can be started a building permit and/or zoning permit is required. This includes roof shingles, sheds, gazebos, fences, swimming pools (inground and above) and siding. If you have any questions or need more information call the CEO/ZEO (building inspector) at 784-2508.
