SCARECROW SEMINAR AND CONTEST KICKS OFF FALL EVENTS
The Kinderhook Business and Professional
Association will sponsor a scarecrow seminar Sunday, October 6 from 1 to 3
P.M. on the Village Green. The instructor for the learn-to-build program will
be Massachusetts Art Institute graduate Michael Melle. The seminar is free to
everyone and while there are no required supplies some may be useful. Call
758-1825 for more information.
After you have made your scarecrow, you are
welcome to participate in the Scarecrow Contest. Scarecrows must be 3 feet tall
and visible from the road. All scarecrows must be completed by Saturday,
October 12 for judging October 13th. Winners will be announced on Sunday,
October 20th at 2 P.M. on the Village Green. Businesses will receive ribbons
for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and residents will receive special prizes.
Entry forms may be picked up at Blackwood &
Brouwer Booksellers or Silver Lining Gallery.
ANNUAL HALLOWEEN PARADE
The Kinderhook Village Recreation Commission will hold its annual Halloween parade for children of the village on Thursday, October 31 at 6:00 P.M. More details of the parade will be forthcoming; please watch for announcements to be posted on bulletin boards and at businesses around the Village.
VILLAGE CANDLELIGHT NIGHT SET FOR HOLIDAYS
The Kinderhook Village Candlelight Night will be Friday, December 13th. Plan to visit our festive village and all the beautifully decorated stores and shops. Most businesses will be open and serving free refreshments. Santa Claus has promised to greet the children at the National Union Bank of Kinderhook. Carolers will stroll through the village and special events such as live music will entertain you as you shop and browse.
LEAF PICKUP TO BEGIN OCTOBER 14TH
D.P.W. Superintendent, Jack Taylor has set Monday, October 14th, the
tentative date for the start of leaf pickup.
All piles of leaves should be
raked without stones and twigs, to the edge of the road or over the sidewalk to
the street for pickup. Leaf pickup will continue into November. There will be
an announcement in the newspaper regarding the end date for picking up
leaves.
VILLAGE OFFICE HOURS AND GARBAGE STICKERS INFO
Village Clerk Ellie Savosky would like to remind residents that the
Village Office hours are Monday through Friday 9 A.M. to 1 P.M.
Garbage
stickers are available during regular office hours and Monday evenings from 5
to 7 P.M.
You may also order garbage stickers by mail. Send a check, made
out to the Village of Kinderhook, with the amount, number of stickers, (please
note $1 or $2), and a self addressed stamped envelope to the attention of the
Village Clerk.
MAYOR'S OFFICE HOURS
Mayor Richard Phillips has announced a change in the time of his office hours. Effective Monday October 21st the Mayor's new hours will be from 6:00 P M to 7:00 P.M. every Monday except holidays. There will be no office hours due to a special meeting on October 7th.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
The Village of Kinderhook has openings periodically on the following boards: Zoning Board of Appeals, Planning Board and Recreation Commission. If you are interested in serving on one of these boards in the future please write to the Mayor at the Village Hall or contact the Village Hall for more information.
BUILDING PERMITS REQUIRED
Residents are asked to remember that before any construction is started a building permit and/or zoning permit is required. This includes roof shingles, sheds, gazebos, fences, swimming pools (inground and above) and siding. If you have any questions or need more information call the CEO/ZEO (building inspector) at 784-2508.
SNOW RELATED MATTERS
The Kinderhook Village Board of Trustees would like you to know about certain Village Laws that pertain to the upcoming winter. Please read them and see if you are aware of them.

PARKING ON SIDEWALKS
New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, Section 1202, prohibits the parking of vehicles on sidewalk. Please do not park cars and trucks on sidewalks, in front of fire hydrants and in crosswalks.
IDEAS FOR BULLETIN
If you have an idea for this newsletter or would like to see a particular subject addressed please contact a member of the village board or send a letter to the Village Hall. All material will be reviewed and given consideration for printing.
RECREATION COMMISSION LOOKING FOR TEENS
The Village Recreation Commission is looking for interested teenagers to explore the possibility of establishing a teen center or coffeehouse upstairs in the Village Hall. If you are interested please call 758-1748 or drop by a Recreation Commission monthly meeting, 7:30 P.M, every 3rd Wednesday at the Village Hall. Adults are also encouraged to stop by and give your ideas and support.
DO YOU DISPLAY YOUR HOUSE NUMBER?
In order to assist fire department and rescue squad members as well as locating neighbors in need, it is very important that village residents display their house number, which should also be their 911 address, in some conspicuous place.

SUMMER PLAYGROUND TO BEGIN JULY 8TH
The Village of Kinderhook Summer Recreation Program will begin
Monday, July 8th and run through Friday, August 16th. The program
will be held at the Rothermel Avenue Park from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00. In
the case of inclement weather, children will meet in the basement of the
Kinderhook Dutch Reformed Church.
Kathy Williams of Niverville is the
summer program director. Many of you may know Kathy from her volunteer work at
the ICC primary school or as a Little League T-Ball coach. Her years of
experience working with children in the parks and recreation area will surely
provide the children with an enjoyable experience this summer.
Day camp
activities will include arts and crafts, basketball, soccer, flag football,
tennis and board games as well as field trips to Waterslide Park and MacHayden
Theater just to name a few. There will be various theme days throughout the
summer. These include project adventure, pet safety, drug awareness, Olympics,
Holiday in July and pizza days. As you can see this summer will provide the
children with plenty of fun and educational opportunities
Registration for the summer playground will be held at the Village Hall
on Mondays, June 17th and 24th between 7:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. If you
have any questions or need more information this would also be a good time to
ask.
KINDERHOOK VILLAGE COMMUNITY NIGHT PLANNED
Mark your calendars for September 7th for the annual Kinderhook
Village Community Night sponsored by the Village Recreation Commission. The fun
begins at 6:00 P.M. with music , TOTS the clown, plenty of good food and
refreshments. Bring your friends and family, meet your neighbors and at the
same time support our local volunteer and civic groups as they prepare
delicious food and fare. The fun ends at 9:00 P.M. but not before the bonfire
and marshmallow roast.

JULY 4TH PARADE READY TO STEP OFF
The eighth annual Village of Kinderhook People's Parade sponsored by the Kinderhook Business and Professional Association will take place this July 4th at 11:00 A.M. Line up will be at 10:45 A.M. on Rothermel Avenue by the playground. Hope to see everyone marching or watching as we celebrate our independence.
VILLAGE BANDSTAND READY FOR AUGUST CONCERTS
Once again the Village Square will be tapping and jumping as the Ghent Band performs for 4 Friday evenings beginning August 2nd. Bring your lawn chairs or roll your car windows down and enjoy a Kinderhook tradition. The concerts which start at 7:30, are made possible by the Village Board of Trustees and you the Taxpayers.
FARMER'S MARKET BEGINS
Every Saturday from now until early October enjoy the Farmer's Market on the Village Green. Vegetables, fruits, flowers and jams are some of the goodies you may purchase for you and your home. The market runs from 8:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. and is sponsored by the Kinderhook Business and Professional Association.

Greetings Village Residents
On behalf of the entire Village Board, I would like to present to you the first edition of the Village Bulletin newsletter. It is our intention to improve communications with you and encourage your participation in village activities. The newsletter will be included with the water bills in April and October. Mayor Announces Office Hour
Mayor Richard Phillips has set his office hour every Monday from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the Village Hall. If you have any concerns, recommendations, or other issues you would like to discuss feel free to stop by. In his absence a Trustee will fill in.

Recreation Commission Plans Easter Egg Hunt
Don't forget Saturday, April 6th is the annual Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by the Village Recreation Commission. The event is open to all village children ages 2 through 10. The fun begins at 2:00 pm behind the James Vanderpoel House.
Summer Playground Help Sought
The Village Recreation Commission is currently accepting applications for Program Director, Counselors, and Junior Counselors for the Summer Playground program. If interested, please send resumes in care of Village Recreation Commission to the Village Hall, 6 Chatham Street, Kinderhook, NY 12106.
Village Clean-Up in May
The annual Village Cleanup Weekend will be held May 18th and 19th, Saturday and Sunday. As usual, containers will be located behind the Fire House on Chatham Street. This service is for Village of Kinderhook residents only. Proof of residency may be required. Time for disposing of refuse is between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm.

The Palmer Engine and Hose Company would like to thank all of those who contributed to the purchase of the carbon monoxide detector. The fire company continues to acquire the newest equipment available in order to protect our homes and lives.
