Here is our coverage in the Capital District Technology News from the March 1997 Tri-City Computing Magazine.

Where does the expression "O.K." come from?

Did you ever wonder if O.K. was just a figure of speech or did the letters actually stand for something? Well the most popular story around here has it that O.K. really started out as "Old Kinderhook."

It seems that back in the 1700s, apples grown in the Kinderhook area were packed in crates marked "Old Kinderhook". There is even one on display in one of the eateries on the village square. Apparantly, people started referring to them as "O.K." apples. Gradually the term was taken as a description of the apples' good quality rather than their location of origin!

Historic tidbits such as this, and much more up-to-date features can be found on the Kinderhook Connection website. The Kinderhook Connection(sm) is pleased to announce that it is now registered as a domain name on the world wide web. This means that from now on, internet browsers will be able to find the website at the easy to remember address http://www.kinderhookconnection.com/, so don't forget to update your bookmarks!

What's this Internet thing anyway?

The Internet is a network of thousands of computers that are continuously connected and communicating. Any computer large or small can participate by dialing in to a computer that is permanently linked to the Internet, usually by telephone or data line. In this way, it is possible to access files on computers around the world instantaneously. Imagine making a phone call to anyone in the world for the same price!

Where does the Kinderhook Connection fit in?

The Kinderhook Connection aims to provide news and information about the Village and the Town of Kinderhook, New York to the widest possible audience. Local residents and visitors from near and far will benefit from this up-to-date information about Kinderhook happenings, services, and businesses.

How will The Kinderhook Connection benefit Me?

Sharing news and information electronically is very environmentally sensitive. Everyone with a computer could share info without having to print paper signs, send out notices in the mail, or distribute copies at a meeting. In addition, these postings remain accessible over and over again. They can be used whenever needed without having to worry about finding those saved notices, flyers, or ads.

Okay, so how do I participate in this Electronic Community?

In its early stages The Kinderhook Connection will be growing rapidly in order to accommodate as many people as possible. Later on, updates will be posted monthly. Everyone is encouraged to submit their ideas and suggestions for consideration.

Any community or social non-profit organization or public service serving Kinderhook will be allowed one listing free of charge. Business members of the Kinderhook Business and Professional Association will have one complimentary thumbnail listing. Any other individual, group, or business who wants to be posted may purchase classified listings or display ads at rates that are probably lower even than the newspapers!

For example, classified listings start at $1.00 per line per month, and only $5 for business card size. Graphics and links are also available.
