MVBNHS "Lindenwald"
Welcome to Lindenwald
"Lindenwald" was the retirement estate of the Eighth President of the United States, Martin Van Buren. Van Buren was one of the ablest national politicians during the Early American period of our country's history. He was born in the village of Kinderhook, lived there until he was a young man, and spent the last 21 years of his life at Lindenwald.
Information
Information on fees, tours, and sales items is available from the park ranger in the kiosk adjacent to the parking lot. Holders of National Park passes are admitted free.
Lindenwald Tours
See Martin Van Buren's 36-room retirement home. Tours start every half hour from 9 am to 4 pm daily through October (except no 11:30 or 12:30 tours). Sign-up for tours at the kiosk.
Special Events
The many special events planned for this season are listed on the Kinderhook Connection's Calendar of Events. Full descriptions are available in the National Park Service's Official Press Releases.
Walking Tours
Walking tours lasting approximately ninety minutes will be conducted by the ranger staff around the grounds at Lindenwald on Sundays in October. The tours will interpret the Lindenwald farm as well as the National Park Service's plans to restore the landscape.
Advisories
Parking is sometimes limited, please follow the signs and the directions of park rangers so that we may maximize use of the spaces.
Picnic lunches on the lawn are encouraged. However, fires of any type are prohibited!
Be aware of stinging insects in your area, as ground dwelling bees and wasps are common and many are found on the lawn.
Please contact a park ranger if you need first aid or if you have a safety concern.
On days of special events the 2:00 tour of Lindenwald is cancelled so that you may enjoy the event.
You may wish to bring lawn chairs for special events held at the park, as provided seating is very limited.
